The Rawnsley Graduate Studentship

This scholarship/ Studentship is available to new DPhil/PHD students and will be awarded in 2021.

This scholarship covers course fees (at Home status rates) and carries a maintenance allowance of £15,609 p.a. for up to three years.

Application Deadline:

Applications should be sent by 12pm on Friday 7th May 2021 at the latest.


  • All applicants have to been offered a place at the University for a DPhil commencing in the 2021-22 Academic Year
  • Applications will considered by a selection committee including Fellows of the College in Modern Languages and in English.
  • All award is given by merit
  • Applicants might not need to be interviewed.

How to Apply

Applicants should please email Sophie Cheng, the Admissions Coordinator, at, including the following supporting documents:

  1. A covering letter of no more than two A4 sides explaining the pertinence of the applicant’s research to the academic interests of the Rawnsley Studentship.
  2. A written statement giving us permission to review your application to the University.

The Shepherd Family Scholarship

This scholarship started in 1959, and was made possible by the generosity of St Hugh’s alumna Karen Margrethe Shepherd.

The award will be given to an outstanding candidate who has applied to St Hugh’s College.

This one-year scholarship will provide £500 for one year, to a student beginning a postgraduate degree in English in October 2021.

The Richmond Graduate Scholarship

This is a one year scholarship and awards as much as £3,000 to a student beginning a postgraduate degree in Medieval and Early Modern English in October 2021.

This award is given to outstanding candidate who has applied to St Hugh’s College.

This scholarship was made possible in1955 by the generosity of St Hugh’s alumna Professor Velma Bourgeois Richmond and Professor Hugh Macrae Richmond.

St Hugh’s Clarendon Scholarships

The St Hugh’s Clarendon awards normally offer full fees and maintenance costs for up to three years of DPhil study.

This award is organized centrally and not by the college.

Applicant must choose St Hugh’s as their college of preference on your University application form.

The college offer more than 5 scholarships linked to the Clarendon Fund and supported by donations from generous individuals to  St Hugh’s College.

St Hugh’s AHRC Scholarships

This scholarship is linked to the Arts & Humanities Research Council and supported by generous donations to St Hugh’s College.

The college offers full scholarship and gives  maintenance fee for up to three years

Applicants must have to chose St Hugh’s as your college of preference on your University application form, or indicated that you wish your college choice to be overridden for funding purposes, then you can be automatically consider for this award.
